Homemade Play Dough Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy recipe:

  • Flour
  • Cream of tartar
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • *Optional: glitter, essential oils, or extracts for scent

Why Cream of Tartar Matters

Cream of tartar helps create that classic soft and stretchy play dough texture. It also helps preserve the dough, so it lasts longer without getting crumbly.

If you’ve ever made your own play dough that felt dry or stiff, there’s a good chance it didn’t include cream of tartar.

How to Make Homemade Play Dough

In a large pot, or large saucepan, whisk together dry ingredients. This will help prevent clumps later on.

Pour in the water and vegetable oil. Add a few drops of food coloring if you’re just making one color.

If you plan to make multiple colors, you can wait and knead food coloring into smaller portions after cooking.

Cook on medium heat and stir constantly.

At first, the mixture will look thin and lumpy. Keep stirring. After a few minutes, the dough will begin pulling away from the sides of the pan and form into a ball.

Remove from heat.

Allow the dough to cool until it’s cool enough to handle.

Knead the dough until smooth.

Divide the dough into sections and knead dye into each section.
