Make your own homemade brown gravy mix in minutes! This easy, budget-friendly recipe is perfect for mashed potatoes, roast beef, or Sunday dinners. Better than store-bought and full of cozy flavor.

There’s Nothing Like Homemade Gravy

There’s something about homemade gravy that just makes a meal feel complete. Whether it’s poured over mashed potatoes, smothering a roast, or soaking into a fresh-baked biscuit, gravy is comfort food at its finest. But let’s be honest, sometimes we just don’t have the time (or energy) to make it from scratch every single time we cook a meal.

That’s exactly why this homemade brown gravy mix is one of my favorite pantry staples. It’s quick to make, stores beautifully, and saves me from teaching for those little store-bought packets that always seem to run out right when I need them most.

This mix has rich, savory flavor, and it’s made with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. No preservatives, no mystery additives – just real ingredients you can feel good about serving your family.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Brown Gravy Mix

  • Saves time: Making gravy is as simple as whisking together the mix, butter, and water. It’s ready in just a few minutes!
  • Budget-friendly: Store-bought gravy packets might not seem expensive but making your own costs just pennies per batch.
  • Customizable: Want a stronger beef flavor? Add more bouillon. Want it spicier or smokier? Toss in cayenne or smoked paprika.
  • Shelf-stable: It keeps for months in your pantry – perfect for busy weeknights or last-minute dinners.

Ingredients for the Mix

Here’s what you’ll need to make your homemade brown gravy mix:

  • Flour – This acts as your thickening base. All-purpose flour works great.
  • Beef bouillon – This is where the rich, savory flavor comes form. You can use granules, powder, or even crushed cubes.
  • Garlic powder – Adds warmth and depth flavor.
  • Onion powder – Rounds out that classic brown gravy taste.
  • Black pepper – For just the right amount of bite.
  • Paprika – Adds a little color and subtle smokiness.

How to Make the Mix

Making this mix couldn’t be simpler:

  1. Combine all ingredients.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, beef bouillon, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and paprika until everything is evenly combined.
  2. Store it.
Pour your homemade gravy mix into an airtight container or large mason jar. Label it with the name and date – it’ll stay frsh for up to 6 months in a cool, dry place.

That’s it! You now have a ready-to-go gravy mix whenever you need it.

How to Make Gravy with the Mix

Now for the fun part – making the gravy!

Ingredients:

  • Butter
  • Homemade brown gravy mix
  • Water

Directions:

  • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in gravy mix. Let it cook for about 30 seconds to a minute, allowing the flour to brown slightly – this gives your gravy that deep, savory flavor.
  • Slowly whisk in water, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  • Continue whisking until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

Tips for Perfect Gravy Every Time

  • Use real butter. It gives the best flavor and helps your gravy brown nicely.
  • Whisk constantly. This prevents lumps and gives a silky-smooth texture.
  • Want it thicker? Add an extra teaspoon of mix.
  • Want it thinner? Whisk in a splash more water until it’s just right.
  • Add extra flavor. For special meals, try whisking in a splash of pan droppings, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, or even a bit of cream for richness.

Ways to Use Homemade Brown Gravy

Once you start using this mix, you’ll find so many ways to use it. Here are some of my family’s favorites:

  • Mashed potatoes: The classic combo that never fails.
  • Roast beef sandwiches: Drizzle gravy over slices of roast beef for a diner-style favorite.
  • Meatloaf: Take weeknight meatloaf to the next level with a spoonful of brown gravy.
  • Poutine-style fries: Crispy fries, melty cheese, and this gravy? Heaven.
  • Steak and mushrooms: Add the gravy for a cozy, steakhouse feel at home.

You can even mix it into casseroles, pot pies, or beef stroganoff for a richer, more comforting dish.

Why Make It Yourself Instead of Buying Packets

Homemade mixes might seem “extra”, but I promise – this one is worth it. When you buy store-bought gravy packets, you’re mostly paying for fillers and preservatives.

Your homemade version has:

  • Simple, pantry ingredients
  • No MSG or unnecessary additives
  • Customizable flavor
  • Better texture and freshness

Plus, there’s something really satisfying about making something so useful from scratch. It’s one of those small homemaking wins that just makes you feel prepared and capable – like you’re running your kitchen instead of it running you.

How to Store Homemade Gravy Mix

Once your mix is combined, store it in:

  • A mason jar with a tight lid, or
  • A sealed plastic or glass container

Keep it in a cool, dry place like your pantry. If you live somewhere humid, you can toss in a small food-safe desiccant packet (the kind that absorbs moisture) or keep it in your fridge to stay fresh longer.

Shelf life: 4-6 months
Yield: About 3 cups of mix, which makes roughly 24 cups of gravy!

Make It a Family Staple

If you’re someone who loves homemade, cozy cooking – this recipe is for you. It’s a little thing that makes a big difference, and it’s one less item you have to buy at the store.

I like to make a double batch every few months, label it, and keep it in the pantry. It saves me time during the week and gives me that old-fashioned “made from scratch” feeling even on nights when dinner comes together in a hurry.
